Ntate's Story
In a quiet village nestled in the valleys of Lesotho, Ntate, who had spent more than a year without a leg took his first steps again—and with them, a bold stride into a future full of possibility.
This story begins thousands of miles away, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Courtney Layman, a dedicated member of River Oak Church, partnered with Steps 4 Love to make a difference that would cross borders and change lives. As part of River Oak’s mission team, Courtney reached out about a man in Lesotho who had undergone an amputation but had never received a prosthesis. With no access to local prosthetic care, Ntate had been left to navigate life without mobility, independence, or hope of walking again.
When Steps 4 Love heard his story, we knew we had to help.
Working with Courtney and her church, our team custom-fabricated a prosthetic socket and assembled the necessary materials right here in the U.S. Every component was carefully chosen and prepared by our dedicated volunteers and clinicians, ensuring that once the leg reached Lesotho, it could be properly fit and adjusted for comfort and function.
When the River Oak Church mission team arrived in Lesotho, they carried not just supplies but the tools for transformation. In collaboration with local partners and the Totty family, the prosthesis was delivered and fit with care. Ntate's first steps—wobbly but determined—were met with joyful tears, laughter, and a look of pure awe. His wife beamed with pride. For them, this wasn’t just a leg. It was a restoration of dignity, movement, and hope.
As the team worshipped in the valley church that Sunday, surrounded by a community energized by faith and compassion, the deeper meaning of this moment settled in. Mobility is more than physical—it’s freedom, it’s belonging, and it’s a tangible reminder that someone, somewhere, cares enough to say, “You are not forgotten.”
At Steps 4 Love, we believe in the power of collaboration, the importance of access, and the life-changing gift of mobility. Stories like this one fuel our mission to bring prosthetic care to underserved communities around the world.
Thank you to Courtney Layman, River Oak Church, and everyone who continues to support our work with prayers, donations, and time. Together, we’re building more than limbs—we’re building bridges of hope.
