Craig's Story
In the small but bustling world of Craig’s Complete Canines—a doggy daycare and training program he built with passion—Craig Bischof was known as the guy who could calm any dog and brighten any room. For years, Craig and his wife, Deena, poured their hearts into their business, creating a safe, joyful space for pets and their owners across Pennsylvania.
But in 2024, their world changed overnight.
In June, after months of battling complications from Hereditary Vascular Disease, Craig faced a life-altering above-knee amputation. The clotting, pain, and infection left him with no other choice. One day, he was teaching obedience classes; the next, he was fighting to save his life.
Losing his leg was devastating—but what came next was even harder.
Despite the severity of his condition, Craig’s applications for disability and Social Security were denied, leaving him and Deena to shoulder every medical bill, business cost, and household expense entirely on their own. While Craig worked tirelessly to recover, their business began to struggle without him. The financial pressure was crushing. His independence, identity, and livelihood suddenly felt impossibly out of reach.
That’s when a friend reached out to Steps4Love.
From the moment we heard Craig’s story, we knew he needed more than encouragement—he needed action. With support from our partners at Bremer O&P, Steps4Love arranged for Craig to receive a level of prosthetic care that had been entirely inaccessible to him. We flew him from Pennsylvania to Florida, ensuring he had hands-on access to high-quality evaluation, casting, fitting, and a path toward walking again.
For Craig, this wasn’t just travel. It was hope.
With every appointment and adjustment, he grew stronger. For the first time since his surgery, he could envision standing tall again—returning to the work he loves, reconnecting with the dogs who miss him, and reclaiming the life that felt taken from him.
Today, Craig is just two months away from being able to walk independently and return to his business. His progress is a testament not just to technology, but also to compassion—to what becomes possible when people come together.
Still, Craig and Deena continue to face significant financial strain as they wait for the day (in early 2026) when Craig will finally qualify for Medicare. In this difficult gap between need and access, community support remains their lifeline.
At Steps4Love, we’re honored to stand beside them on this journey. Craig’s resilience inspires everyone—and reminds us why our mission matters. When a person is fighting to regain their mobility, they shouldn’t have to fight alone.
With every act of generosity, we’re helping Craig take his next step. And with it, moving him closer to the life and independence he deserves.
